Having previously worked across Suffolk's districts, CTConsults was commissioned to develop a county-wide Festivals & Events Strategy to support the sector's long-term growth. Rather than measuring success through visitor numbers or GVA alone, we worked with partners to define growth more holistically — considering economic impact, quality, diversity, participation, environmental sustainability and reputation.

Working alongside Destination Insight, we assessed the economic contribution of major events, including the Tour of Britain and Ed Sheeran's sell-outs at Ipswich Town FC, while mapping more than 130 festivals and events. Each was assessed using industry standard classification to understand its current position, future potential and strategic value, creating an evidence base to guide investment and sector support.

The strategy has since shaped a range of practical initiatives, including adapting Suffolk's pioneering Carbon Charter for festivals and events, informing new grant programmes across three districts, supporting the launch of new festivals, increasing use of Screen Suffolk's crew database by event organisers, and contributing to Ipswich's UK Capital of Culture bid.
